Have you ever wondered why you find tiny ants in your home and you don’t know what to do about it? Then this article is for you.
Tiny ants can be found anywhere, from your kitchen to your bathroom and to every corner and outside of your house into the woods. This is simply because they are part of nature’s tidy squad.
They remove food scraps around the house effectively and devour decayed wood but here is the issue people don’t want their help. Tiny ants can invade your home for a different reason but the primary reason is for food and water particularly in the dry season. This is why you tend to see them in your kitchen and sometimes in your bathrooms and other water collection areas in your house.
What to Do?
Remove food particles around the house
The first thing to do is to ensure that tiny ants don’t have access to food since their primary reason to invade your home is food. When they can’t find what they are looking for, they are going to leave for another place.
So start by removing food particles around your house particularly in the kitchen, keep the floors and the top of cabinets clean and keep foods that ants are drawn to easily like sugar in sealed containers.
Store food properly
You can store food in places like freezers, refrigerators, and reusable plastic bags. When you do this too, it is difficult for any tiny ant to gain access to where your food is.
Remove ants’ harbor around the house
Remove things near your home that can provide refuge and moisture to an ant colony. For example the Carpenter ants harbor in places where there is a damaged wood, wet and soft which they can bore to make their colonies. Remove ants’ harbor sites around the house by clearing shredded leaves, fallen logs, tree stumps, thin out groundcover plants properly or discard them if necessary and trim tree limbs so the branches won’t overlap and touch the house then eventually ants trail it into the house. Ensure you don’t bring firewood into the house and make sure you store firewood away from your house as far as possible.
Practice good waste management
Also, waste management is important to keeping ants away from your home because tiny ants can get into your trash bin. So make sure you empty your trash properly, and wipe out the outside of your bin and keep the bin tightly sealed. Do this to every other container after use.
Just like humans need water to survive, so do tiny ants. Repair water leakages either from the roof or pipes and stagnant waters.
Ensure that drain pipes direct water away from your house because heavy downpour of rain can flood ants’ nests and help them to relocate to a nearby building which can be your house.
Close up cracks and clean up ant trails
Lastly, you can prevent ants from invading your home by closing up cracks, holes, and gaps in the exterior part of the house where pipes or wires enter the house. This is because the foragers come inside through these holes and when they find some pieces of food they leave a trail (pheromones) on the ground back to their nest which will help others to trace the food source. You can remove these trails by slicing some lemons and place them around the corners of your house.
